Welcome back to 5 Minutes To A Better Mix, a free mixing series where we’ll look at 31 mix tips in the next 31 days. I hope you’re ready for a month packed with mixing tips and techniques!
Your Faders Are Like An EQ
To start things off this time I have a huge foundational tip for you: treat your volume faders as your first line of EQ. Sometimes the slightest volume fader tweak between channels can make all the difference in getting the tonal balance you want out of all your tracks. So before you reach for that vintage EQ, go back to the faders and tweak till it’s right.
Share The Wealth
If you like what you’re learning here on the blog, do me a huge favor and share it with at least one other person. We’ve got 30 more videos coming this month so why not share the wealth and help someone else get a great start to their recording and mixing in 2012! Thanks for being a part of The Recording Revolution, and here’s to a year full of great music making!

The magic already started..
Happy new year to everyone
great tip as usual like mixing small bits of information are assimilated and remembered for longer perids of time.
Its funny, moving the faders is the what we did when we first started mixing, but as we learned more about EQ and Compression and etc we forget about it. Great “dont forget the fundamentals” type lesson. Soooo glad the “5 mins” series is back! love it.
And by the way, what song is that in the video? i really like it.
Thanks Noah. The song is from an artist named Josh List. You can look his stuff up on iTunes I believe.
Graham,
Happy New Year! I hope it is a blessed and prosperous one for you. Enjoyed the last round of mix tips. This is just more icing on the cake. Thanks for all you do to help “spread the wealth” in the recording education.
God bless!
Hey this one video has open my eyes and ears to a beter understanding.
Cool new theme music Graham.
Thanks for all the knowledge. Have a Blessed New Year
Am I getting blocked for a reason? NONE of my posts since the site changeover are showing up….
Other than having to approve your comment, nothing should be getting blocked.
Dude just wanna say your videos have been very helpful! Thanks man! God Bless!
Graham,
Great tip – once again – back to basics is the theme for the beginning of 2012 for me!
Question: why the + sign at the end of your track names? Is this something extra you are doing to those tracks?
JS
The plus sign means it’s a playlist that I’ve edited. So before doing any edits, I copy the playlist (virtual take or track in Pro Tools) and edit on the duplicate. I notate this with a plus sign so I know which version it is.
Just joined Graham and have so far really enjoyed all of your previous tips.
You know the simple options are sometimes so overlooked, this is a good starting point for me as its been years since I last recorded any sort of live music so I really appreciate all that you are sharing with us.
