Today I want to talk about bass guitar. It’s such a crucial element to any good mix (that features a bass guitar of course) so bass deserves a little bit of attention in the mixing phase. Specifically in the area of compression. Let’s look at how and why to use compression on your bass.
Consistency Is Key
When I use a compressor on bass guitar I’m looking to do two things: add fatness to the sound and to create some consistency in the plucks and picks of the string. A compressor can do both of those things very well. Let’s take 5 minutes to check it out!

Graham, man I just have to brag on you!
What you’re doing with all these posts is absolutely insane. I truly value the time and effort you’re putting into this. I’m sure all your readers feel the same way.
Besides the all the technical advice, your responsibility and encouragement is invaluable. I don’t think I can find the right words to express my gratitude.
Stay firm my friend, what sets you apart from most blogs/sites I’ve seen is that you are not trying to push anyone to buy something; yet you offer the best tutorials I’ve seen out there. Its a no brainer to get your stuff since we know what to expect!
You’re a true blessing for all of us!
Thanks and God bless you!
Luis, can’t thank you enough for your kind words of encouragement! I’ll keep doing what I’m doing!
Using the digi comp works well, but I have found that I really like a like a few others like bombfactory, CLA 7-A, or the absolutely lovely SSL comp, or recently I’ve really liked the tone of “Smack!” comp. Just throwing in a few more cents for BG sounds! Graham, you’re awesome! Keep up the great work!
I enjoy and use your tips of great advice and I especially admire your choice of Christian songs used to display your given examples. May you continue to be blessed for not compromising your belief in Christ!!!
Thanks Gary! Honored to do what I do. Thanks for being a part of the website.
