When it comes to keeping a mix dynamic and interesting, we tend to forget about changing the sound of our drums within a song. But that is a fantastic way to keep the listener’s attention. Imagine if your drums instantly went from full, clear, and polished to raw, gritty, and punchy?
Back To The Room Mic
Remember a couple of days ago when we over-compressed our room mic(s) on the drums? Yeah, it’s time to pull that back out of the hat and make it the star of the show. Today’s 5 minute video shows you how to take advantage of the tracks you already have and turn your drums inside out: no plugins needed!

Mate, love it. Great tip. Will have to utilise a room mic soon!
I’m loving the last two video’s about the ‘Room Mic’! Definitely going to try it out on my next session!
What Mic are you using for your’s? Any reason you did it in mono as opposed to stereo?
That’s an awesome one, buddy! Awesome.
I typically use large diaphragm condensers. Anyone will do. Mono only because of channels on my portable rig. And it can be easier sometimes to just stick with mono. Either is great though.
can’t wait to start room micing!
Question. If you haven’t recorded a room mic, can you create one by sending your drum group or OH’s to a small room reverb then add a compressor? I realise that this would not give you the same results but would it be similar?
Cool tip Graham, really enjoying this series of videos- keep up the good work!
