Today’s tip is so simple yet it will totally change your world if you aren’t already using it. It’s called rocking a high pass filter in your sessions; and it couldn’t be easier to implement…
The Best Technique You Won’t Hear
Using a high pass filter on your tracks is one of the best things you can do for your mix that you don’t actually hear. It’s what you take out that actually helps your mix come together. Do you have 5 minutes? Watch today’s video and start mixing better!

Thx Graham, to this point I had been misusing the high-pass!
Looking forward to the next 28 days! Thanks.
I can’t wait either!
Graham, thanks so much for this. I have two questions, first in using a tascam dp-02 is there a way to apply this with the 2 band shelving eq? Secondly, if you have thetime would you listen to a song I have recorded to get your input? On this one song imparticular I tried following the tips you have on the blog. Thanks again.
I look forward to each lesson every day… thanks
Graham, could you give the the project you’re using to experience following the videos? Thanks!
You mentioned at the end to consider experimenting with high pass on the drums, and I’ve actually recently (as in, within the past week) started putting a steep high pass at about 25 Hz, and it actually tightened up my kick drum and got rid of a lot of mud and “woof” that my songs were experiencing, and brought out more punch in the kick, which is what I like in my mixes (instrumental rock).
Best. Tip. Ever.
super idea to do the 31 day thing, Graham. keep it up!
I have for years been doing just this live mixing, using the HPF button on the FOH board channels, but didn’t even think of it in my studio PT rig… wow. Good stuff, man!
I just found these videos today and have to say THANK YOU GRAHAM! I’m just getting into recording and this is such a great help. You are awesome.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for these wonderful videos. Can you tell tell the name of the high-pass filter which looks easy to use. Also, will these videos stay on the web as they are great reference tools.
