Recently I sat down with award winning mix engineer, Kevin Ward to ask him some questions about the psychology of mixing and his workflow. Kevin is an awesome guy who has been mixing music for like 30 years.
Based out of Nashville, TN, Kevin mixes music professionally and also has started an online resource (MixCoach.com) to help new mixers improve their skill. His website is a great place to go for video tutorials and help from a guy who knows his stuff. Plus he’s got a helpful eBook you can download right away!
Kevin agreed to let me interview him with some common questions I get from readers like you all the time. We talked for almost an hour about mixing tips, but he pulled together a quick version of helpful stuff. In this snippet of our interview Kevin gives some answers to the following questions:
- How do you approach a mix?
- How do you know when a mix is finished?
- What can new mixers do TODAY to improve their mixes instantly?

hey Graham this is a really good video especially in the part when you’re talking about when know if a mix is finished.
now i have a question and i hope u may help me, i’m buying a condenser mic but i cant decide which one buy cuz i have 2 options
the first one is the behringer b2 i know that u talked about this mic and i know that is cheap and really good.
the second option is the audio technica at2050 i know a little bit about audio technica, & i know that they manufactures good mic
well this are my 2 options. i hope u can give me ur opinion about, cuz u have much more experience in this stuff
thanks for all ur tips and tutorials are so good
and sorry for my english ahaha
Bastian, thanks for the comment. Both mics you mention are fantastic. They both feature multi-pattern pickup, a pad, and bass rolloff. The B2 Pro is a bit more affordable, so if money is the issue go with that. Otherwise it really doesn’t matter too much. The AT mics sound great, as do the Behringer ones.
Graham.
This was a fantastic interview. I mean wow. Very refreshing
Glad you enjoyed it. Kevin is a great guy. Great stuff to say.

“Set a time limit, set a budget. And when you reach those? You are done and you have got to deliver the product. If you don’t? Then you are just living in fear of what I am doing is not good enough. You have got to be at some point brave enough to deliver your goods.”
Very Powerful advice here. This just floored me.
